The SBC V2 I tested with 16C450 from
Siemens and 16C550 from TI. No problems!
But: AY-3-8910 is not to 100% compatible:
It was
also produced under license by Yamaha (with
minor modifications, i.e. a selectable clock divider pin,
and a double-resolution but double-rate volume
envelope table) as the YM2149F; the Atari ST uses
this version.

I have run my SBC v1
with an old 8250A UART. This is about equivalent to the
TI or NS 16C450. The FIFOs on the 16C550 (16 bytes) or
16C750 (64 bytes) are nice, but not entirely necessary.
BTW: The older 8250A uses more power than the CMOS parts.
