Re: [N8VEM: 14578] Inexpensive enclosures

HI Andrew,

Yes I think Dan's beautiful enclosure is perfect for the N8.  I haven't purchased one yet but I hope to do so in the future.  I agree that the N8 would not fit on a Mini-ITX form factor without significant changes.

I think Greg and I were more thinking about future projects that might come up.  The Mini-ITX form factor might suit other SBCs that we dream up.

One of the biggest issues with home brew is the enclosure.  It makes sense to leverage some of the more recent technology (such as IDE disks, Compact Flash, SD cards, VGA etc) when possible.  Maybe using embedded PC and Mini-PC enclosures falls into that category?

Imagine if we could produce a Mini-ITX board, say the N8 MK-II (with 80x25 using the V9938 ?) with MSX compatibility and the builder could fit it into to a small Mini-ITX enclosure with built-in PSU?  Would it be popular?  Could it revive 8 bit computing?  :-)

I wasn't sure if the prototype boards could go to that size but it looks like they can.

Just something to think-on!

Cheers!

Max

Hi Max!  www.33each.com will make prototype boards up to 60 square inches.  A mini-ITX is about 45 square inches so they should not have a problem.  The N8 circuitry needs more room though (approximately 60 square inches).

Thanks and have a nice day!

Hi Greg,

I have also looked at the mini-ITX form factor.  I think it would be ideal for some of our projects as we can take advantage of the available enclosures and power supplies. I have a spare Morex enclosure that would be ideal for a SBC of some sort. The one I have uses an external 12 Volt power supply and a fan-less power supply board.

Andrew, how does the 170mm x 170mm PCB size work out with the PCB service you are using?

The other thing you would need is the IO connector shield. Does anyone know if there is a way of producing a custom version of those?  It is fairly thin metal but they seem to have a ridge that presses into the enclosure cut-out which might be tricky to replicate.

Cheers!

I have always looked at usage of packaging / enclosures for home-built projects.
Largely for easy fit and finish ... It's a computer hobby ... Not high-school metal working.

The mini-ATX form factor (170mm x 170mm) is being rapidly used for automotive and industrial single board solutions.
The form factor now has enclosures for home, vehicle and hares environments.

Mini-Box.com now offers their M350 universal (Swiss Army Knife) enclosure at $40 each or $35 (10+)
available in silver and black.

Something to consider for future projects, like N8 (Home Computer).
