Your BBS project and recent surplus (cheap) of Avocent Cyclades T100 Serial Server (now Emerson Power), is why I asked.  New, they are ~ $300, but surplus at 1/10th that price.

20+ years ago I used Hughes and DEC terminal servers to "front" serial and legacy NCR processors without LAN abilities.
Doug's security concern is valid, but It can be managed.
The T100 is SMALL, PowerPC with 32 MB ram and 4 MB Flash, Linux, and supports SSH, version 2 access.
SO, access to 8-bit via iPad in living room?
