I also recommend putting additional ground wire between Zeta and PPIDE
(for example a thicker wire between mounting holes). It looks like the
only ground wire in parallel connector doesn't provide stable ground
and leading to some signal integrity problems. I had similar issues
with CF cards, but not with real IDE drives.

Also you can use CLRDIR command to "format" the disk.
