Re: [N8VEM: 14091] Re: MAX 232 charge pump caps on N8 Cpu Board

At higher data rates, the .1uf cap will NOT provide enough voltage from the charge-pumps to meet strict RS232 standard... but should work just fine at low data rates...
also, one can just replace it with a MAX232a or equiv to be safe...

Hi Doug,

The MAX232 datasheet is specific about requiring 1.0uf caps, so yes, you "should" use 1.0uf caps with the MAX232.  The MAX232A, on the other hand, specifies 0.1uf caps.

If 0.1uf caps are working with a MAX232, then I can't argue with that, but you would be safer to stick with the appropriate caps for the variation of MAX232 chip you are using.

Thanks,

Wayne

The Charge pump caps c24-c28 are marked as 1.0 uF for the max 232 on the N8  Cpu Board.
I have been using .1 uF and they work fine on the max 232 chips i have on other boards.
Is there another reason for the 1.0 uF values or should i use the .1s ?
