Re: [N8VEM: 5659] Re: New Build - N8VEM Mini V8

Ok, please let me know if you want a board.

re the images, just reply to the message via email and attach the images (and/or any other files)

Hi James,
I'm using your rom "Auto CPM keyboard LCD display 38400". I am
building my own using your vbnet ide at 1200 baud etc with the
Keyboard and LCD selected but the keyboard and LCD are not working for
me. Thanks for your offer to send a ready made board but i'll try to
get this one going. I'm thinking of using another PC just to duplicate
the problem to confirm it's not my PC/OS.
P.S. how do you get the images on these messages?
Thanks,
Nik

This is most strange. Which rom version are you using? Or are you
building your own? (if the latter, via the vb.net program, you can
choose to build with the keyboard and/or LCD driver code included).
Maybe this is worth pursuing as the first step is getting some
meaningful I/O.

There is something very strange about the pinout of that serial port,
and about the leds not working. Pin 9 on the serial port is not even
connected to anything so I have no idea why it makes a difference.

Re debugging, well I've had boards that work and ones that don't and
sometimes the only thing is to swap chips one at a time from a working
one to a non working one.

I'm playing around with a propeller emulation that takes most of the
N8VEM boards and puts the entire thing on one board. Drives VGA
directly, keyboard, LCD and also has 8x8Mb drives on an SD card. Uses
Altair SIMH disk images directly, which makes mass file transfers a lot
easier. See attached.

Which means.... that I've got some spare Mini boards soldered up and
working and which are now surplus. If you like I could send you one?

Cheers, James

Hi James,
i've burnt new rom images from 1200 to 38400 all outputing garbage but
responding to the keyboard. Using the weird pin arrangement (1,4,9
joined) i can see the startup screen but don't have keyboard or LCD
so can't test the transfers. I see in the n8vem folder that there are
lcd and keyboard com files. I presume these are the programs that are
incorporated into the rom bios for keyboard and lcd functionality? To
get programs onto the rom drive i have been 'piping' them across from
the eprom but it's a little restrictive in the size of the file i can
burn on the epom but can get bbcbasic and other smaller programs into
the RAM drive. I have made up a new cable and have started replacing
chips. So far i have changed the comms chip and the max232 and even
the z80 2MHz with the standard 4MHz and will slowly replace the rest.
When i first socketed the board i tested each socket for voltage and
they were all fine . And as you know from the previous note they were
tested in socket aswell. Nothing is physically apparent. No solder
bridges and all soldering looks good. Is there a generic way of
testing whether the chips are working ? I have an Oscilliscope at home
at the moment that might come in handy. May take a few weeks waiting
for parts but there will be a happy ending to this thread :-)
Cheers,
Nik

Just to save time rather than testing all the chips for power supply
problems, maybe just the 139 then the 151 and then the max232.
