This makes me think about another oddity: the German keyboard doesn't have (at least the ones I know about) a "caps lock" key, it has a "shift lock" key: (Other keyboards I used like the Spanish Spain and LA have a "caps lock" key) you may guess what happens when you are custom to use this caps lock key and type some letters and numbers... you get some ugly symbols instead !... who, please who thought that was a good idea... I think that in gnome it can be changed but I haven't found how to change the behavior in windoze, yet. I think that swiss keyboard doesn't have this *ahem* feature. I don't remember anymore Sad

This frustration started with the Caps Lock on Ohio Scientific Computers!

Especially annoying as replacement latching switches are essentially unobtainable Confused

I can type. Without looking, I reach up for the numerals in the upper row of keys. It was the only way we could do it in typing class in high school on the typewriters. I always keep the number lock off. One reason is that my CAD uses the number keypad for cursor directions, with the corner keys being exactly 45° diagonal, and in my programmer's text editor, the 5 in the middle puts the line that has the cursor active in the middle of the window. These are super handy. I also use the DEL key that's on the decimal point of the number keypad.
